Album Review : Dave Plaehn’s ‘Radio Sister’

Dave Plaehn is known for Contemporary Blues…but now he’s switching things up. Radio Sister has a lot going on you’ve got some disco, rock, blues and jazz to appeal to the masses. Born and raised in Iowa, a young Dave fell under the music influence of his parents’ tastes for sound of Opera virtuoso Mario Lanza , Sarah Vaughn and her contemporaries. Having a childhood infused with blues Dave Plaehn developed his taste and talents playing in cover bands, learning harmonica and later performing in a jug band….playing the music of Jim Kweskin Jug Band.

Focusing on music full time after college Dave released a record ‘Smokin’ in 1981 and in the years since, he self released other EPs under his own name and other projects. Dave’s most recent project is ‘Radio Sister’ of the 12 tracks, all are very different from each other, you’ve got a little reggae infusion on I Want Love…a song filled with yearning and wanting of reciprocated love. There some bouncy tunes ‘Soda Fountain’ and a New Orleans style, deep south blues sound embedded in the ‘Leadbelly Medley’. It’s the 90’s R&B that rules the tracks ‘Is Anybody Listening’ and vocals and blues harmonica end the album in  ‘Stranger Blues’…. an album a bit far flung, with all the different genres wedged in for my taste, but there is something for everyone here.

‘Radio Sister’ was released December 8th 2014
