If you happen to be a frequent visitor of bookstores like Barnes and Noble, you’ll notice that there has been an incline of the amount of coloring books that are being available for purchase, and dont mean the large ten page simple books you can find in the kids section. I’m talking about books with a good fifty to one hundred pages of beautifully detailed and intricate designs meant for adults to get lost in.
You can find different themes like ‘Tropical animals’ or ‘exotic patters’. Whats getting even more interesting is the fact that more prominent artists and companies are jumping on the trend and are producing adult coloring books for their fan base. Like Chuck Palahniuk, who is mostly known for Fight Club recently released what might be the most bad-ass coloring book you’ll ever see, called Bait. This book contains 8 different stories that you can fill in as you watch it all come together. If a coloring book by Chuck isnt hardcore enough for you there is also a book released f0r Buff The Vampire Slayer that you can find in Target, Something im pretty excited about, I mean come on. Comic book artists are jumping in on the bandwagon as well, there are a few comic book characters that have a coloring book or two, waiting to be discovered.
So what is it about adult coloring books that makes us feel so excited? Apparently therapists have been using coloring books to help they’re patients for a very long time. CNN states that according to the American Art Therapy Association, art therapy is a mental health profession in which the process of making and creating artwork is used to “explore feelings, reconcile emotional conflicts, foster self-awareness, manage behavior and addictions, develop social skills, improve reality orientation, reduce anxiety and increase self-esteem.” So coloring is basically good for your mental health, so why not right?
