Ah yes, the annual GISHWHES has returned for it’s 6th year running.
This worldwide, record breaking, international scavenger hunt has grabbed the attention of millions of fans of the tv show Supernatural for a whole week as they try to complete 300 items on a list that Misha Collins revealed on the GISHWHES website. Wow that was a lot for one sentence. Allow me to break it down a little bit.
GISHWHES stands for the Greatest International Scavenger Hunt the World Has Ever Seen. Misha Collins, who plays the angel Castiel in SPN, has been hosting this event during the first week of August for a long time now. For this year’s event, the hunt started on July 30th and will end on August 6th. People from all parts of the world race against each other in teams of 15 as they try to gain the most points by completing the items on the list.
The list’s items range from creating things made of feminine products to wearing a William Shatner mask in NYC to making socks for the homeless. Misha, fellow co-stars of Supernatural, and celebrity friends of Misha make the items. Just keep that in mind. Also, each item you complete for your team has a different amount of points. The team with the most points wins! Of course, every year, there are new items on the GISHWHES list. The people participating in GISHWHES are not allowed to post pictures of this years items on social media as the hunt is going on, and if they do it will be a penalty because those points for that item will not count for their team. So you might see people running around doing crazy/helpful things, but you won’t see pictures or videos about it until August 7th, when Misha says that it’s okay to post.
Some of the items also revolve around this year’s GISHWHES mascot, which is the Slangaroo. The mascots are different every year, but they have the common theme of conjoined animals. Like the Slangaroo which is a sea lion and a kangaroo.
Half of the world isn’t doing GISHWHES for no reason. When you sign up to participate in GISHWHES, the website will ask for $18.99, which goes to the charity Random Acts Of Kindness. Not to mention that you have the chance of breaking a few world records! If charity work and world records aren’t a big enough prize for you, the winners of GISHWHES get to go on vacation with the Misha Collins himself. This year’s vacation spot is Iceland!
Last year was the first year I started to play along with the hunt and I plan on continuing to do it every summer! It really is a lot of fun and it’s for a great cause, so why not join next year’s hunt?
