Have you ever found yourself asking whether or not something is inappropriate? Most people say that if you do, chances are, it is. I know this to be false, because I’m one who usually plays it safe when it comes to the length of a skirt or dress and maybe how ‘skimpy’ it may come across. Even if it seems appropriate, I still doubt it. That’s part of being aware of one’s perception.
Of course, there are different situations in which acceptance for the length of a skirt varies. Occasions like going out to the club, a social/cocktail event, and even a cousin’s wedding are clear examples of when and why length is important. It all comes down to one question: is it sultry or slutty, tasteful or tacky?
If you’re anything like me, you wear skirts and dresses all year round, even with the brutal winters New York has to offer, but the spring has quickly and finally approached us- all I know is, I’m saying ‘so long’ to my trousers! Skirts are understandably gaining popularity and this must be addressed before we embarrass ourselves in public! Now how exactly do we establish what’s appropriate and not?
The Wedding
Unless it’s based on a dramatic theme such as Las Vegas, Mardi Gras, or whathave you, a wedding is definitely a formal event–black tie status. A great cocktail dress is in demand, with the color palette falling within the season in question, the location in question. Either way, a skirt that isn’t too short may get you all the attention- but remember- we’re seeking positivity! Aim for one that’s at least 3 inches longer than where your fingertips hit. When in doubt–go with a little black dress!
The Club Outing
Going out dancing is probably the one time where short is acceptable but again, you never want to lose the taste aspect of things. Wear whatever you like, as short as you like so long as it meets the below criteria:
-It doesn’t ride up when walking
-If you lean forward to reach for a glass on the counter, no one can see extra skin
-There is no sign of underwear from your skirt when bending with the knees
-No one can see underwear, or anything else for that matter, when going up a flight of stairs
-While sitting down, half of your thighs are covered.
At Work
Spring is finally here, ladies! Whether you have an office or retail job, appropriate attire is key. It’s a little challenging dressing up when the temperatures go up but you definitely want to work with the rules.
Wearing something two inches above the knees is out of the question. Bear with me, girls. We’re challenged to shop with caution and seek lighter materials. Pencil skirts and loose Bermuda shorts as presented in the 3.1 Phillip Lim spring/summer 2011 collection are perfect- chic, crisp, and cool.
As Mademoiselle Gabrielle Chanel said, “A girl must be two things: classy and fabulous”. Style is eternal and should always be kept in a sophisticated way. Balance out the amount of skin you show by maybe exposing legs and one arm or maybe wear sheer stockings and a strapless piece. Leaving things to an element of mystery is much sexier!
