SE’s Comic Nook News; A Shared Giant Monster Universe in the Works – Godzilla vs Kong in 2020

Legendary Pictures and Warner Bros. have announced plans for the future, with their giant monster movie films. Both companies have given word that a shared cinematic universe is on the horizon. Among this reinvented pantheon of city-smashing titans; none other than Godzilla (returning from the success of the 2014 reboot) and Skull Island’s own, King Kong.

Monarch, the human organization that uncovered Godzilla in the previous film, will further their involvement in the franchise, acting as our ‘human element’ amidst the destruction and carnage set to unfold from now until 2020, when Godzilla vs. King Kong is said to be released in theaters.

The official word came today from Legendary CEO, Thomas Tull and Warner Bros CEO Kevin Tsujihara, thatKong: Skull Island will be released in 2017, and will be followed in 2018 with Godzilla 2. The films – and possibly more in the interim – will lead up to the clash of kings that will be Godzilla vs. King Kong in 2020.

Goddy-300x158“Audiences really responded to Godzilla,” says Tull. “Today, I’m excited to reveal that film was only the beginning of an epic new entertainment universe. As a lifelong fan of these characters, I’ve always wanted to see the ultimate showdown, and today we’re pleased to be announcing that and more.”

Tsujihara had this to say about newly announced cinema-verse: “Working with our kong-300x199partners at Legendary, we enjoyed tremendous creative and commercial success with ‘Godzilla’. It’s great to be able to revisit these characters and help create a franchise with so many creative possibilities for filmmakers. Fans love these big, globally iconic films and it doesn’t get any bigger than this.”

Currently, production for Kong: Skull Island is set to begin on October 19, which means this shared cinematic universe of monsters will be underway in a matter of days.

With Legendary attaining of the rights to the Toho’s company’s cast of creatures within the Godzilla universe, other epic entities such as Mothra, Rodan, King Ghidorah and even Mecha Godzilla (far fetched, but hey I can dream) stand as potentials to join the pantheon of monsters in future films.

However, in response to this announcement from Legendary and Warner Bros, I personally am plagued with a looming question or two on some of the details about a Godzilla vs. King Kong film. At the fore of my concerns; how will King Kong — a creature made famous for climbing of the Empire State Building in 1933 — go up against a reinvented Godzilla which – and I’m just making a fair observation here — was huge enough to KNOCK DOWN the Empire State Building with a casual swoop of his tail!?

How the production folks and film-makers behind this new monster-verse answer this is nagging question has yet to be known. Until they do though, stay plugged in to SE for more Comic Nook News as it develops.GvKK2
