SEV’s Comic Nook News: Preacher’s First Season Concludes As #2 New Cable Drama

Preacher concluded its inaugural season on Sunday and AMC has reported that the fantasy-drama about Jesse Custer and his ineffable word, Irish vampire Cassidy and the ‘soup-cannon’ crafting Tulip have earned the #2 new cable drama spot of 2016 (falling just behind FX’s American Crime Story: The People vs. O.J. Simpson), with the first season averaging 3 million viewers per episode.

“When we announced plans for a TV adaptation of the iconic comic book ‘Preacher,’ the most consistent reaction – often, even, from existing fans – was, ‘There’s no way to do that story on television.’ Thanks to the vision, passion, smarts and guts of Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, Sam Catlin and the entire team on this show, we have just concluded a season of television that looks like nothing else I have ever seen on television,” said Charlie Collier, president of AMC, SundanceTV and AMC Studios. “Huge thanks and well done to the trio of Dominic Cooper, Ruth Negga and Joseph Gilgun, who are now leading a road trip unlike any other. And, of course, thank you again to our partners at Sony Pictures Television, Tom Cruise, and the creators of ‘Preacher,’ Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, the latter simply for being so damned crazy in the first place. It is the time of the Preacher, and the story really has just begun.”

The official word was made not too long ago that Preacher will return for a 10-episode second season.

Published between 1995 and 2000, Preacher tells the tale of of Jesse Custer, a small town Texas preacher who, nearly at his faith’s end, finds himself merged with a supernatural entity, Genesis, birthed from both an angel and a demon. Imbued with the ‘word of God’; the ability to make anyone obey his commands. Jesse then hits the road, reunited with his ex-girlfriend, Tulip, and joined by a rowdy Irish vampire, Cassidy, to track down God himself and force him to explain why he abandoned his duties in Heaven.

Preacher stars Dominic Cooper as Jesse Custer, Joseph Gilgun as Cassidy, Ruth Negga as Tulip, Lucy Griffiths as Emily, W. Earl Brown as Sherriff Root, Anatol Yusef as DeBlanc, Tom Brooke as Fiore, Derek Wilson as Donnie Schenck and Ian Colletti as Eugene/Arseface.

Brought by way of  Sony Pictures Television and AMC Studios co-production, Preacher will be produced by Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen through their Point Grey banner, along with Neal Moritz’s Original Film. The pilot was written by Sam Catlin who will serve as the show runner.
