Adding to the Star Wars franchise, Walt Disney Pictures and Lucas Films released the first teaser trailer for Rogue One: A Star Wars Story today during Good Morning America. The trailer can be viewed in the player below!
A prequel to the original Star Wars films, Rogue One is the tale of a group of resistance fighters who unite to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star. “Rogue One takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope and will be a departure from the saga films but have elements that are familiar to the Star Wars universe,” said Kathleen Kennedy. “It goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know. Gareth is such an innovative director and I’m so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he’s selected for ‘Rogue One.’”
Rogue One stars Felicity Jones (The Theory of Everything) who will lead the group of freedom fighters, and will be joined by Diego Luna (Milk), Forest Whitaker (The Butler, The Last King of Scotland), Ben Mendelsohn (Bloodline), Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Jiang Wen (Devils on the Doorstep), Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal), Riz Ahmed (Nightcrawler) and Alan Tudyk (Serenity) who will be playing a performance-capture character in the film.
Academy Award-winning visual effects supervisor John Knoll serves as chief creative officer at Industrial Light & Magic, while Simon Emanuel (The Dark Knight Rises, Fast & Furious 6) and Jason McGatlin (Tintin, War of the Worlds) serve as executive producers for the film along with Tony To and Kathleen Kennedy (Band of Brothers, The Pacific) Alexandre Desplat (The King’s Speech) will compose the film’s score.
Directed by Gareth Edwards, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is slated for release on December 16, 2016.
