The Evolution of the Mood Ring: Necomimi

If you’ve ever been to Comic con, you’d notice that just about everyone takes their costumes and appearance pretty seriously, whether its having your Naruto cosplay costume looking legit, or having the perfect Loita dress, everyone makes an effort make a statement with what they have on. Walking around the Javits center during comic con this year, it was hard to not to notice almost half of the crowd sporting these cute headbands called “Necomimis”. Necomimis are these adorable “Brainwave Cat Ears” from Tokyo. Unlike the usual common ear bands, these actually move in certain patterns based on electrical impulses that your brain gives off and is picked up by a brain sensor that is attached to the band, so your mental state is translated into ear movements.

As far as the ear movements go, there are three depending on your mood. The ears perk up when you’re focused, wiggle up and down when your “in the zone”, and drop down when your relaxed. It’s not just the movements that are made to fit your personality, but they also come in different colors like white, black, brown and even leopard print. You simply un-attach the ears that are on the band and replace them with the new ones. Also, soon to be released are cute little horns that you’ll be able to attach to the band if the ears are a bit too girly for some.

With seven booths set up at comic con Necomimis were definitely attracting a lot of attention this year, unfortunately if you missed them they can only be purchased online for one hundred bucks.  If you are interested in buying one, keep in mind that hair and makeup can interfere with the connection, so if you have bangs make sure they are out of the way, so the sensor can be secured against your forehead.
