DayGlow Whore
2013
Seattle based band Import/Export have a new release, “Dayglow Whore,” which is ambient, trippy and deeply diffused. The songs are often
deconstructed, only be held together tenuously before being snapped back into form. “Death is for the Living” seems to circle itself before finding its shape.
“Flightless” reminds me of Pink Floyd without mimicking the fabled Brit band. The second part of the song asserts itself and struts purposefully.
Aloof and engaging at once, Dayglow Whore is a construct of conflicting emotions, “We Sold it All” is light, upbeat, airy and distant; a tinny reminder of the unobtainable and out of reach. Chief songwriter, front man and bassist Chris Cullman said of the project, “Our songwriting is completely informed by the intersection of sound, fine art and cinema.”
Some of the instrumentals, “Children of Light,” and the title track, feel like incidental music for ordinary life. Which is perhaps the point.
