There is a trend stampeding from runways to stores this season. From first sight it appears to be contemporary but is actually a culture reintroduced by our own fashion ancestors! 2013, meet ‘Mod’, 60s fashion once described as “fashion obsessed and hedonistic cult of the hyper cool.”
Mod derives from the word ‘modernist’ and comes straight from the streets of metropolitan London becoming more than just a fashion choice. Teens and young adults were no longer responsible for afterschool money made to assist their families, giving them freedom to use their money on fashion.
This generation was very intentional and conscious of clean cuts, sharp lines, and preservation of clothing. The new fashion culture aspired to leave the old “greasy” rocker looks of the 50s behind. Instead this new generation adopted a cleaner and smarter look that some critiqued as “stuck up” and “an irresponsible investment of decent family upbringing.” describing how some young people would rather starve in order to keep up with trends and the party lifestyle that accompanied it.
Today, Mod comes back with a vengence in Spring 2013 through familiar color blocks and harsh lines within the following fashions:
Moschino
Chris Benz
Louis Vuitton
And just for fun, check out the song, “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” by popular band Kinks for a fun mockery of the 60s obsession.
