Some of the blessings in present day foolishness are the conversations and true feelings that have presented themselves. Let me state first in the era of Political Correctness, I hold dear honest conversation.
I normally don’t provide personal opinions as a multimedia journalist. However, with that being said, as an activist, I do feel the need to address a few things that keep coming up. For example, one person online wrote a statement (this person was not “white” nor “black” by the way) : “What people need to do is stop looking at the past and saying they have been suppressed or held back cause of there gender or race hello look at ur president he is not white wake up America !!!”
Our president being African American doesn’t magically make America an over night love fest of rainbow children. As a country we need to face the reality of our past to better understand the hurt and frustrations of today. A past that is very much alive for African Americans. We may not see young black men being physically lynched by mobs in this generation. However we do see young black men being lynch by a system that is supposedly designed for all. Must we see a white sheet over someone’s head to see injustice?
Awareness is key. Why the anger? The outrage? Because this is real life for many Americans. Not just African Americans. It’s not just a TV program or an internet news clip that can be shut off or ignored. Racism and sexism is real and are very much alive. Maybe not until someone experiences it or someone they know has, they have to “privilege” to not see it.
I believe in what this country can be. Racist Americans and non racist Americans can live together in peace. It’s not about getting rid of any side but more about having mutual respect and understanding. Respecting that we all have our own views and respecting everyones right for personal happiness. This is a call to listen as well as talk. The effects of post traumatic slavery disorder is not just a an African American thing. It’s an United States of American thing. It has “allowed” us to not hear one another, not be willing to listen, unwilling to learn and worst of all, live in la la land that this is hurting our nation.
