Goodbye Blue Monday
Independent release, 2013
There must be something great happening in Budapest, Hungary. This is the seventh release from punk rockers Bankrupt, who in the spirit of their name, have nominal financial expectations, because they are giving this EP away for free.
Free. Nada. Gratis. Zilch. This is like a legal version of an illegal download. And it’s better, because you don’t have to worry about the ASCAP police storming your basement and rummaging through your digital files to see where you got what you got. And this is the second free EP these guys were good enough to send me.
This starts off hard with “Timewaster,” which is anything but. The opening riff is a tease. Catchy and as fleeting as a cool breeze on a sweltering day, it leaves you wanting to hear it over and over again. “Stop wastin’ my time!” is the refrain. But it’s too late for that. By the time you get to the end of this song, it’ll have earned a permanent spot on playlist, as well as being stuck in your head for the rest of the day.
All the songs on here are great, but the other track that is impossibly addictive is “Veronica.” Upbeat and as perky as a cup of coffee chased with a Red Bull, the song is sunny and positively radiant.
“Monday Morning” sounds like if the 1979 Clash were singing about the commute to work. Usually the sort of thing Madness would have sung about. Still fun.
One of the truly remarkable things about Bankrupt is their guitar tone. The leads are brightand melodic. Memorable and sweetly playful, conveying a good natured-ness over top of the hard charging rhythms. It’d be great if Bankrupt made a small fortune from their impressive songs, but think they’d be almost as content if they were a better known punk band, and they really should be.
